In a world that often feels far from nurturing, it’s no wonder so many of us are chronically drained. True safe spaces—where we can show up exactly as we are, without masks or expectations—are rare. Add to that the pressure to perform, achieve, and measure our worth by external standards, and it’s the perfect storm for our nervous systems to spiral into overdrive. Eventually, we crash into shutdown mode, and from there we start to feel low.
So, what do we do? We compensate. We numb the low feelings. We binge-watch Netflix, reach for comfort food, pour another glass of wine, or scroll endlessly through dating apps and shopping sites. Some of us chase excitement through constant social plans, events, or quick highs. Deep down, the baseline of how we feel is low—so we’re always trying to escape it.
But here’s the catch: these numbing and escapist behaviors only add to the stress on our systems, creating a vicious cycle. The more we avoid what’s really going on, the heavier it gets.
Breaking the cycle
How do we stop this endless loop? The solution might sound simple, but it’s far from easy: we have to come back to our bodies.
This means being with whatever we’re avoiding—whether it’s despair, loneliness, fear, or something else entirely. Dropping into the body and allowing ourselves to feel what’s there, without judgment or resistance, helps us process what’s been stuck. And when we do, something remarkable happens: our baseline begins to rise.
From this neutral place, the constant need to numb, escape, or chase excitement fades. We’re no longer battling our inner landscape because we’ve made peace with it.
In a culture that runs on distractions and quick fixes, being able to sit with ourselves is the new luxury. To be fully present with what is and to hold space for all of it.
So, if you’re tired of being tired, consider this: what if the quick fix you’re seeking isn’t found in doing, but in finally feeling what’s been waiting for your attention all along?
